Film Club: Frances Ha (2012)

Frances (Greta Gerwig) lives in New York, but she doesn't really have an apartment. Frances is an apprentice for a dance company, but shes not really a dancer. Frances has a best friend named Sophie, but they aren't really speaking anymore. Frances throws herself headlong into her dreams, even as their possible reality dwindles. Frances wants so much more than she has but lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness. Frances Ha is a modern comic fable that explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure, and redemption.*

 11 Random Facts About Me:

1) I'd love to visit Ireland and Japan someday.

2) I'm quite embarrassed that I'm not a great cook, but I would definitely love to improve.

3) I was born on Christmas Day. I will say it kind of sucked at times but I've still had some great birthdays. 

4) I love the scent of certain types of wood and for some reason, I love the scent of a musty basement. Weird, I know. 

5) I love Harry Potter and I get a bit weepy when I think about my first experience reading the books.

6) My guilty pleasures are Sims 3 and Second Life. I love to dress up my Second Life avatar. Yep.   Dork. I also like Nancy Drew games (and I've looked up cheats before even though the games are meant for 12 year olds). 

7) I met my boyfriend online almost 6 years ago and I moved to live with him in Ohio.

8) I'm a very anxious person and I've suffered from anxiety my whole life.

9) I get way too into television shows and movies. I just love a good story.

10) I collect pressed pennies, journals, classic children's books with beautiful illustrations and Hello Kitty stuff.

11) I think centipedes and millipedes are terrifying.

-Silver. I don't think I pull off gold well.

2. What is your favorite Starbucks (or your favorite coffee shop) drink?

-I really love the pumpkin chai tea latte from Saxby's. 

3. What is your favorite holiday?

-I've always loved Halloween. Scary movies, candy, costumes and fall of course. 

4. Would your rather live in cold snowy rainy weather, or sunshine and heat?

-I can't stand feeling too hot, so I think I'd pick rainy weather. I've always found something relaxing about the rain.

5. If you could study one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? -Sociology. 

6. What is your special or hidden talent? -I never know what to say when I'm asked this. I have a freaky good memory when it comes to people. I remember strange details and conversations forever. 

7. What is your favorite scent? -I'm cheap and mostly just get scents from Bath & Body Works. I love the scents Twilight Woods and Country Chic. 

8. Batman or Superman? [Answer carefully... just kidding.. but really ]

-Batman! I love how he doesn't have special powers but still kicks some ass. 

9. What is your favorite meal?

-Being honest here. Pizza. Or Pad Thai.   

10. TV show (or movie) you couldn’t do without? -I love re-watching The Office, it always cheers me up when I'm in a bad mood. I also re-watch Nip/Tuck often. Six Feet Under is probably my all-time favorite though. I love dark dysfunctional dramas. 

11. Favorite beauty product? -I usually keep it pretty simple but I like using tinted lip balms for just a little bit of color. I love Baby Lips by Maybelline and Burt's Bees tinted lip balm.

Film Club: Cracks

Cracks (2009): Miss G is seemingly a force of nature, a glamorous presence beloved and idolized by her blossoming charges at an all-girls British boarding school. Clown Girl by Monica Drake
As Drake's debut opens, Nita, otherwise known as Sniffles the Clown, is tying balloon animals for a horde of greedy, sticky children at a fair. Suffering what may be a cardiac event, she's rushed to the hospital—after trying to get help from a clown fetishist, who simply drops his phone number on top of her prone form. Welcome to wacky, stressful Baloneytown, where clown prostitution, stoned dogs and fire juggling–cum–arson are the norm. Nita struggles to make enough money clowning to keep herself in oversized shoes and squirting daisies, while also saving for Clown College tuition for her boyfriend, handsome clown Rex Galore. But Rex is mostly MIA, and Nita's longing for him settles on local cop Jerrod. While not much happens, the pace of the narrative is methamphetamine-frantic, as Drake drills down past the face paint and into Nita's core, often using Nita's relations with men as the bit. Nita emerges as a fully-realized character, bearing witness to a lot of the emotionally ridiculous and just a hint of the sublime. Some plot threads never quite come together, and a few characters are underdeveloped, but there is a lot more going on here than just clowning around.

Happy Halloween!

Some of the pumpkin spice cupcakes I made last week! They were quite delicious. I love this time of year (it's really my favorite) but I admit, I'm feeling a bit lazy about Halloween. I thought about carving pumpkins buttttt I really lacked the motivation (too messy). Tonight we are just planning to watch World War Z and stuff our faces with Chipotle. Then I shall celebrate with 50% off Halloween candy within the next couple days. Yes.

Little Happies

Macaroons and Madeleines: Welp, although I've been trying to limit my sugar intake lately.....I seem to be failing a bit. Okay, a lot. I've been on the hunt for a bakery around here that sells macaroons and haven't had much luck. During our trip to Columbus this weekend we came across the cutest bakery, Pistacia Vera. I really wanted to try every flavor but we settled with sharing four (raspberry, pumpkin, caramel and a buckeye). I had never tried Madeleines before but a friend kept talking about them so I was curious, pretty tasty too and more spongy than I expected. We definitely will be going back the next time we're in Columbus :D

Bookstores: Also while in Columbus, we were exploring the German Village area and came across this little bookstore.....well, I thought it was small based on the outside but once we were inside it was pretty much a maze. There were 32 different rooms to walk through and we ended up getting lost a couple times. I don't buy many books lately since I get most of mine from the library, but there is something I really love about bookstores. They are relaxing to me and I can spend hours just browsing.

Tea: Trader Joe's Harvest Blend Herbal Tea - delicious! Cinnamon. Apple. Ginger. Orange Peel. Hibiscus. Chamomile. Caffeine free for whimps like me. I've become quite a tea fiend lately but I'm still a bit cheap when it comes to spending a lot on specialty brands. This one was only $1.99. I assume it's seasonal so I will be sad when it's no longer in stores.

Ouija: Perhaps a bit silly, but I was excited when I saw this tin of mints at the World Market store. Ouija Boards are really nostalgic for me and remind me of many tween sleepovers. We'd ask embarrassing questions and do our best to pretend that we weren't moving the indicator. Pretty sure I may have abused it a bit and spelled out some inappropriate words for my friends.

Pocky: It's surprising my teeth aren't rotting out of my head. I rarely see different flavors of Pocky in stores so we had to get this too when we saw it at the World Market store. Haven't tried it yet but I'm sure it's delicious.

Childhood Movies: The Witches (1990) - I loved this movie so much when I was a kid. I had an overwhelming urge to watch it again lately, especially since it's a good Halloween movie. I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed it just as much as I did when I was a kid. (Possibly Spoilery) I remember feeling really creeped out in the beginning of the movie when the little girl is trapped in a painting. The mouse scenes were always so adorable to me. Ahhh.
